Dr. Gavin Weedon is Associate Professor in Sociology of Sport, Health and the Body and Head of the Sport and Society Research Group in the Department of Sport Science at Nottingham Trent University. Gavin is visiting UBC’s Centre for Sport and Sustainability this month, supported by an international research partnership grant he received through NTU, collaborating with the CSS’s Brian Wilson and Liv Yoon. Gavin has, for several years, in different ways, been studying aspects of sport, physical activity/culture, health, and the body in relation to ‘the Anthropocene’ – doing research on topics ranging from mud running events/cultures to protein cultures (collaborating with Dr. Samantha King at Queen’s University) to sociocultural aspects of ‘breath’ (e.g., as represented and understood in relation to racism and violence, to environmental issues and inequities, and more), to sport media and social justice, to his most recent ideas (being explored through the international partnership visit to UBC) on ‘Human Movement on a Heating Planet’ (the title of the partnership grant).
Dr. Weedon graduated from UBC in 2016 with a PhD in Kinesiology that comprised an interdisciplinary programme of political ecology, science and technology studies, and cultural studies.
Dr. Weedon delivered a talk titled “Active Bodies in the Anthropocene: Fitness, Food, and Asphyxiation in a Climate Changed World” to graduate students and faculty on June 13th, 2024. Gavin overviewed his PhD research on mud running cultures, his extensive work on protein with Dr. Samantha King, a new research project on respiratory justice, and general thoughts about human movement on a heating planet.
Thank you Dr. Weedon for your fantastic talk!
